I rode this trail in mid April 2025. I started in Salem, WV. The trailhead address is 153 E Main St, Salem, WV (39.28210, -80.55750). The trailhead is located behind the bank. I rode east for a couple of miles and found the trail closed for construction of a new road bridge above the trail. I was told the trail is passable after work hours. I turned around and headed west.
The entire trail is a West Virginia state park. It extends from Wolf Summit west of Clarksburg to nearly Parkersburg. I found mile markers every mile.
The trail surface was paved in Salem but was rough gravel outside of town. There are supposed to be ten tunnels along this 72 mile trail but was disappointed finding #3 adjacent to the trail (39.27529, -80.66313) and a bit hard to spot. I prefer to actually ride through the tunnels. The rough surface generated a lot of vibration despite 700X40 tires and front shocks on my hybrid bike.
A few more miles to the west I found the next tunnel (39.28076, -80.67389) and was pleased that I was able to ride through. The tunnel was not lit and you will need lights to safely ride the tunnel.
Views along the trail were mostly residential and farm land. Much of the adjacent area was strewn with assorted junk and was not very appealing. I rode 13 miles of the trail for a 27 mile round trip. Perhaps the portion to the west that I did not ride is more visually appealing. I had planned on returning the next day to ride a longer distance along a different portion of the trail but was a bit disappointed and elected to ride the Mon River Trail the next day instead (good call).
